I watched the season when we all tried to find our purpose while living external. There is only one purpose in earth, different functions but only one purpose. In Philippians 1, Paul was in prison and the people were praying for his deliverance. He made this statement, “The thing is not whether I live or die, the purpose is that Christ be manifest. For me to live is Christ.” You may be called to be an apostle or prophet, but that is not your destiny or purpose. That is a function in which you are to manifest Christ. Until we find out that our purpose is to manifest Christ, we will not know what life is about because callings and giftings will not satisfy. When we know Him internally, the motive is love and the purpose is that Christ be manifest. There is no other purpose for the saints. If we know Christ externally and get caught up in destiny and purpose, we fight people to the top, but manifest sons manifest Christ. Things that were important in the external are no longer important when we move into the internal.(This article was taken from a teaching given by Simon Purvis. As a mere boy David was anointed by one of the most powerful and effective prophets of all time. He was anointed, not to be pageboy, not to be the king’s confidant but to be king. But a few short years later he is standing in a cave shaking his head …. totally confused. This seemingly misplaced shepherd cries: Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life (Ps 142:4, NIV). But that was not the end of the story. That scenario certainly didn’t consume most of the pages of the book about David’s life. We also must read all the many, many pages which tell about all the battles David won. As he dances before the ark of the Lord while it is being brought to Zion (2Sam 6:14), they have come too late to tell him God does not make a way for those whom He calls. Scoffers have come too late to tell David God is not faithful, that God does not bring to victory those He ordains.

Joseph had dreams. He was convinced, at one point, that they were not initiated in his own mind. Joseph is called to great responsibility. He is called to rule Pharaoh’s house. He shared his dreams and calling with brethren and as a result ended up in a pit and later in prison. He just stands there shaking his head. Now he is confused. But after a period of time, which was determined by an all-wise and all-knowing God, he stands before his brothers. They’ve come too late to tell Joseph he is out of God’s purpose. They’ve come too late to tell him that God does not step into the lives and conditions of men and work miracles. Standing before them he proclaims without a single doubt, “You did not send me here. It was to save many lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Gen 45:7).

By the time we find Peter in the 2nd chapter of Acts he has ceased his self-inflicting tortuous barrage of oaths and has already responded to the forward-propelling momentum of his Lord’s invitation. He is now proclaiming, “These men are not drunk. I know what is happening here. This is what Joel was talking about. The Christ whom David spoke of was not abandoned to the grave but God has raised this Jesus to life!” (Acts 2:30-32). They’ve come too late to tell Peter that he cannot be restored to praise and purpose. They’ve come too late to tell Peter there’s no use in preaching. They’ve come to late to tell him that this Jewish area is a “burnt-over evangelistic field.” They’ve come too late because Peter just gave an altar call and 3,000 plus have jammed the altars to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Though some irresistible gravity be pulling on us to suck us down that abysmal “sifter” (Lk.22:31), our Lord has prayed for us and we can endure to the end and be saved (Matt 24:13). Jesus was so certain Peter could endure that He said, “And WHEN you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Lk 22:32, NIV) Cf. Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (Heb. 7:25, NAU; also Rom 8:27, 34). Though the temptation is to draw away from God and the fellowship of the saints when we fail, it is obvious from the book of Hebrews that those who are saved are those who draw near to God through Him. The concern Jesus has is not only to see you and I turned back to purpose and productivity but that we might strengthen others to do likewise. While we acquiesce to the pain of our failures and disillusionment and award ourselves precious time to lick our wounds, the strengthening of others simply gets put on hold.

On top of outright trying of our commitment is added the machinations of that “roaring lion” (1Pe 5:8). He seeks to devour us and, at all costs, stop us and leave us choking short of the goal. But we have more than a coach or cheerleader working in our behalf and a blessed assurance undergirding us knowing that Jesus is for us. No matter what presses against us and no matter how determined the opposition is, our Lord is going before us in resurrection victory and in intercession: “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded {permission} to sift you like wheat; 32 BUT I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Lk 22:31-32, NAS).

When we make commitments to our Lord they are honest and deeply felt. Peter unmistakingly plied his pledge to the Lord by showing the depth of his intentions when he offered, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You” (Mk 10:28, NAS). Finally, he adds the top-them-all attestation declaring, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” (Matt 26:35, NAS) Every word and intention will be tried in the fire. Cf…. we went through fire and through water; yet Thou didst bring us out into {a place of} abundance (Ps 66:12, NAS).

Many of us have hit bottom at one time or another. But may each of us come up
and out yelling a loud “no” to the devil and say a quiet “yes” to God as we purify
our inner life and humbly bow before God Almighty so that we can stand on
our feet as sold-out ones for His glory.
“So let God work His will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper.
Say a quiet yes to God and He’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify
your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun
and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before
the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.” (Js.4:10, Msg)

Commitments will be tested by the circumstances that stand between us and the goal
line. Intentions must be bolstered by faith and, quite often, teeth-grinding endurance.
Circumstances, people and time will each take their energy-stealing toll on persons who
press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:14, NAS).
“Press” means to “earnestly endeavor to acquire.” That is not the description of actions
embraced by faint-hearted or unfocused people.

denied that it was His hand that intervened and delivered them

Like Peter, scores of vanquished and beaten-down people have resigned themselves to obscurity and self-imposed penance. Their eyes once bright with hope and expectation are now dull with day-to-day sameness and lackluster existence. Rather than vibrantly walking out purpose as a daily-discovery they endure the rigors of accusing past-opportunity and the heavy yoke of indictment. While chafing under the sandy grind of unrealized fulfillment they eventually master a posture which lessens the painful contortion of their faces so that they appear to “be making it just fine.” Though the preoccupying buzz of obscurity is interfering with the message of restoration, this same Jesus wants them told that He still has need of them and that purpose still awaits. Mark 16:7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to you.'” (NAS) The reason Jesus sent that invitation to Peter was because He was “going before” (Strong) in order to “lead forward” (Thayer). Jesus does not push backward, He brings forward.

The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD, so it is possible for each
of us to discover His works, His truth and His goodness where we live and
move about and it is possible to join with it in spreading it, being
instruments of it, giving opportunity for the LORD’s goodness
to impact our environment.

When the depth of what Peter has done with his denial of Jesus hits him he becomes discouraged, confusion sets its murderous claws deep into his pummeled brain and frustration launches forth a caustic invocation of evil reprisal (*Mk 14:71). His failure beats him mercilessly from one side of his conscience to the other and the result is that he abandons the original promise and purpose for his life. As he wanders off into the unfocused mist of a confused night of shot-values and vanishing commitments he resigns himself forever to be merely a workaholic on an obscure fishing boat, convinced he was no more than a false dreamer all along. Now, getting back on track will be getting back to the realization that already hit him months ago before the fire of testing burned this hot, getting back to “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the Words of eternal life.” (Jn.6:68)

1Cor.2:9—“But as it is written, ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into
the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’” (NKJV)
This is not God hitting us over the head saying, “You haven’t seen or heard things, so
here is a whack to show my displeasure.” Rather, this is God saying, “There are things
that I want you to see and things I want you to hear.” This is a scripture that is meant
to instill in us a desire for the things we haven’t seen and haven’t heard.

Peter just stood there shaking his head…. totally confused…. because he had been telling people, “He has come to sit on a throne.” And now…. this King of kings has just explained to Peter that He will hang on a cross. What was so glorious and victorious now, from Peter’s viewpoint, stinks. Just about the time Peter had God figured out, just about the time he got comfortable walking on a predictable road of committed institution-building, God seemingly veered off to the left and sent Peter’s head spinning in a dizzy flood of questions and attempts to re-evaluate his calling, if indeed he ever had one. Though some irresistible gravity may be pulling on us to suck us down that abysmal “sifter,” our Lord has prayed for us and we can endure to the end and be saved (Matt 24:13). Jesus was so certain Peter could endure that He said, “And WHEN you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Lk 22:32, NIV)

We meditate on God’s will, His original intent for this earth. We stop fixating on the enemy’s war around us by realizing his war has intensified because he is feeling the pressure of this never-ending Kingdom in Luke 1. We turn our thoughts toward that powerful fact. We engage in power, love, and a sound mind by dumping fear-thoughts that have wreaked havoc (2 Timothy 1:7). This is all possible in our lifetime! “Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You’re not the only one plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, He does.” (1 Peter 5:8-11, The Message)

As a mere boy David was anointed by one of the most powerful and effective prophets of all time. He was anointed, not to be pageboy, not to be the king’s confidant but to be king. But a few short years later he is standing in a cave shaking his head …. totally confused. This seemingly misplaced shepherd cries: Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life (Ps 142:4, NIV). But that was not the end of the story. That scenario certainly didn’t consume most of the pages of the book about David’s life. We also must read all the many, many pages which tell about all the battles David won. As he dances before the ark of the Lord while it is being brought to Zion (2Sam 6:14), they have come too late to tell him God does not make a way for those whom He calls. Scoffers have come too late to tell David God is not faithful, that God does not bring to victory those He ordains.
Joseph had dreams. He was convinced, at one point, that they were not initiated in his own mind. Joseph is called to great responsibility. He is called to rule Pharaoh’s house. He shared his dreams and calling with brethren and as a result ended up in a pit and later in prison. He just stands there shaking his head. Now he is confused. But after a period of time, which was determined by an all-wise and all-knowing God, he stands before his brothers. They’ve come too late to tell Joseph he is out of God’s purpose. They’ve come too late to tell him that God does not step into the lives and conditions of men and work miracles. Standing before them he proclaims without a single doubt, “You did not send me here. It was to save many lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Gen 45:7).
By the time we find Peter in the 2nd chapter of Acts he has ceased his self-inflicting tortuous barrage of oaths and has already responded to the forward-propelling momentum of his Lord’s invitation. He is now proclaiming, “These men are not drunk. I know what is happening here. This is what Joel was talking about. The Christ whom David spoke of was not abandoned to the grave but God has raised this Jesus to life!” (Acts 2:30-32). They’ve come too late to tell Peter that he cannot be restored to praise and purpose. They’ve come too late to tell Peter there’s no use in preaching. They’ve come to late to tell him that this Jewish area is a “burnt-over evangelistic field.” They’ve come too late because Peter just gave an altar call and 3,000 plus have jammed the altars to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Though some irresistible gravity be pulling on us to suck us down that abysmal “sifter” (Lk.22:31), our Lord has prayed for us and we can endure to the end and be saved (Matt 24:13). Jesus was so certain Peter could endure that He said, “And WHEN you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Lk 22:32, NIV) Cf. Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (Heb. 7:25, NAU; also Rom 8:27, 34). Though the temptation is to draw away from God and the fellowship of the saints when we fail, it is obvious from the book of Hebrews that those who are saved are those who draw near to God through Him. The concern Jesus has is not only to see you and I turned back to purpose and productivity but that we might strengthen others to do likewise. While we acquiesce to the pain of our failures and disillusionment and award ourselves precious time to lick our wounds, the strengthening of others simply gets put on hold.
On top of outright trying of our commitment is added the machinations of that “roaring lion” (1Pe 5:8). He seeks to devour us and, at all costs, stop us and leave us choking short of the goal. But we have more than a coach or cheerleader working in our behalf and a blessed assurance undergirding us knowing that Jesus is for us. No matter what presses against us and no matter how determined the opposition is, our Lord is going before us in resurrection victory and in intercession: “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded {permission} to sift you like wheat; 32 BUT I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Lk 22:31-32, NAS).
When we make commitments to our Lord they are honest and deeply felt. Peter unmistakingly plied his pledge to the Lord by showing the depth of his intentions when he offered, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You” (Mk 10:28, NAS). Finally, he adds the top-them-all attestation declaring, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” (Matt 26:35, NAS) Every word and intention will be tried in the fire. Cf…. we went through fire and through water; yet Thou didst bring us out into {a place of} abundance (Ps 66:12, NAS).
Many of us have hit bottom at one time or another. But may each of us come up
Commitments will be tested by the circumstances that stand between us and the goal
Like Peter, scores of vanquished and beaten-down people have resigned themselves to obscurity and self-imposed penance. Their eyes once bright with hope and expectation are now dull with day-to-day sameness and lackluster existence. Rather than vibrantly walking out purpose as a daily-discovery they endure the rigors of accusing past-opportunity and the heavy yoke of indictment. While chafing under the sandy grind of unrealized fulfillment they eventually master a posture which lessens the painful contortion of their faces so that they appear to “be making it just fine.” Though the preoccupying buzz of obscurity is interfering with the message of restoration, this same Jesus wants them told that He still has need of them and that purpose still awaits. Mark 16:7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to you.'” (NAS) The reason Jesus sent that invitation to Peter was because He was “going before” (Strong) in order to “lead forward” (Thayer). Jesus does not push backward, He brings forward.
The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD, so it is possible for each
When the depth of what Peter has done with his denial of Jesus hits him he becomes discouraged, confusion sets its murderous claws deep into his pummeled brain and frustration launches forth a caustic invocation of evil reprisal (*Mk 14:71). His failure beats him mercilessly from one side of his conscience to the other and the result is that he abandons the original promise and purpose for his life. As he wanders off into the unfocused mist of a confused night of shot-values and vanishing commitments he resigns himself forever to be merely a workaholic on an obscure fishing boat, convinced he was no more than a false dreamer all along. Now, getting back on track will be getting back to the realization that already hit him months ago before the fire of testing burned this hot, getting back to “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the Words of eternal life.” (Jn.6:68)
Peter just stood there shaking his head…. totally confused…. because he had been telling people, “He has come to sit on a throne.” And now…. this King of kings has just explained to Peter that He will hang on a cross. What was so glorious and victorious now, from Peter’s viewpoint, stinks. Just about the time Peter had God figured out, just about the time he got comfortable walking on a predictable road of committed institution-building, God seemingly veered off to the left and sent Peter’s head spinning in a dizzy flood of questions and attempts to re-evaluate his calling, if indeed he ever had one.
