Forgiveness, when wounded, is not based on “deserving” because we don’t want our forgiveness based on deserving! I will forgive others for being wrong because I want forgiveness when I am wrong. Matt 6:12, “and forgive us our sins, JUST AS we have forgiven those who have sinned against us.” (TLB) We can then rest in God’s wisdom to handle the matter. God said vengeance is His, and you can trust Him with it!
WOUNDS and painful experiences will come, but we can walk out the process of healing and be whole!

We cannot deny we are angry and hurt when someone wounds us; and a desire for revenge is normal, maybe even justifiable. But neither denial or justifiable revenge is positive resolve of anger. For example: a husband with a roving eye continually wounds his wife. She can deny her anger and it will affect her own mind and body eventually. Or she can feel anything from an inadequate failure to pure rage, (and her feelings are understandable and justifiable). Forgiveness will probably be the last thing on her mind. WHY shouldn’t she hurt him in return? Because His SIN would then CRIPPLE her! Sin reveals a problem in the sinner – not in those he sins against. Why make His problem her problem? Whatever other choices she must make in her individual situation, she can ultimately choose to forgive her husband and be released from the cycle of grief and pain.

UNFORGIVENESS is put in perspective in the Spec and Log principle of Matt 7:3, “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? (NKJ) Unforgiveness is the log which is bigger than the sin (spec) we cannot forgive in someone else. God asks us which is worse, someone’s sin or our unforgiveness of their sin? The log is a vivid picture of how blinding unforgiveness can be. It keeps us from seeing that if we build a prison for someone, we have to stand guard over it. We are locking ourselves in, building limitations for our own life. For example, if we don’t forgive someone for rejecting us, we will become blinded by a resident fear of rejection.

How do we CHANGE and resolve anger? The first step is HONESTY. WARNING: our religious mindsets can set us up for defeat, if we believe that being angry is a sin. If that is the case, the accuser of the brethren delights in keeping us on the witness stand, denying that we are angry. He has an open and shut case against us and sues for damages. Sometimes the suit lasts a lifetime! But the Spirit of God lovingly bids us to get off the witness stand and calls us to the Judge’s (Gen.18:25) chambers to admit the anger. This might scare everyone in the courtroom, but it will not frighten the Judge. For in the honesty and truth of the Judge’s chambers change begins. Anger and Grief begin to let go of our emotions.

Blame and self-pity are big signals that anger is in residence. BLAME builds a prison of offense and/or condemnation around you. Forgiveness is the ONLY key to that prison. We must watch for BLAME in our thinking and our conversations. “Self-Pity” is a big signal that anger is unresolved: “I was hurt,” usually justifies anger rather than resolves it. Just like a person who justifies their actions has not repented of them, rehearsing the hurts is refusing to let go of offense. It is blocking the CHANGE needed. Being “hurt” is “tails” and “BLAME” is “heads” of the same coin. We can start with “heads” and describe the action of the offender; or cut to the result, “tails,” and describe the offense taken.

Unresolved anger can become a distorted filter or darkened understanding. The positive person sees life through rose-colored glasses. Likewise, the angry, grieving see life through a bitter-lemon-yellow perspective. Their position and perspective affects their view of self, God, people and situations, and it destroys self-confidence, health, lifestyle and destiny. Unresolved anger can become a generational curse! It can be passed on as an inheritance. Sometimes we cannot find the root of anger because it is in a past generation and it will take the Spirit of God to reveal it!

Unresolved anger can become a driving force, a passion, an energy that can seem good and productive, while it undermines like termites until the core of character, integrity, hope and joy of life is eaten away. Unresolved anger can become depression, fear, sickness and even a pattern of failure. I know a young lady whose anger at criticism and injustice as a child kept her grieving. She became a prisoner of her focus. Because she could not take her eyes off of her victimization, she remained a victim, actually positioning herself for more criticism and injustice. Resolving her anger was the release from the pattern.

Anger is a strong passion, which of itself is not sin; but we sin, or miss the mark, by how we DEAL with it, (Eph 4:26-32). We MUST resolve it according to Godly principles, and resolve it QUICKLY! Ignoring anger does not make it go away. Anger is tangible, as literal as a hot coal. It will burn and destroy . . . health, relationships, opportunities, destiny. Exploding in temper does not resolve anger because even after the bomb blows, it regenerates if there is no CHANGE of heart or issues! Unresolved anger can change form until it is unrecognizable. It can become a witty cynicism. If my jokes and remarks make people laugh the anger doesn’t seem so dangerous! But anger can anchor GRIEF to our lives! mentality of frustration and anger, and begin to express views and attitudes
that aren’t even reasonable. May He help us to recover in a timely fashion
and grant us grace to repair the breaches.

INABILITY or REFUSAL to be comforted can be a sign that the roots of grief have become infected with anger and unforgiveness. It is sometimes difficult to recognize anger or unforgiveness because they have many faces. Anger can SEEM like a responsibility. ‘I must stay angry to protect my family. I must stay angry to protect myself from this ever happening again.’ Or, ‘I must stay angry to insure the guilty party does not go unpunished!’ Anger can even seem to be a positive force and be used as a form of power or control in chaotic times. However, the long range repercussions are not good. James 1:20, “For man’s anger does NOT bring about the righteous life that God desires. (NIV)

If we do not receive comfort, we become CRIPPLED by GRIEF. One of the tell-tale signs that GRIEF has crippled a person is they continually rehearse their trials until the listener fully understands and relives their experience. They usually believe their experience is so unique that no one else can fully understand or sympathize. Another mark of grief being in residence too long is one physical battle after another. Receiving comfort closes the door on calamity or loss. Continued grief keeps the door open, so calamity keeps coming! Hopelessness is not just emptiness, it is a vacuum that sucks in despair. Likewise Grief can become a vacuum that draws more tragedy. WE CANNOT LIVE THERE!

I know a lady who always viewed herself as a “Pastor’s Wife”. When her husband died, the “pastor” died and she suddenly had no identity! She mourned but did not move on to comfort. In the heavy fog of grief she even considered suicide; but God “called her sons to her side to speak to her, encourage and instruct.” She received the comfort and CHANGED from a woman in her 70’s wanting to forfeit her future to a woman who is passionately building the future as she travels and ministers to many!

We cannot deny we are angry and hurt when someone wounds us; and a desire for revenge is normal, maybe even justifiable. But neither denial or justifiable revenge is positive resolve of anger. For example: a husband with a roving eye continually wounds his wife. She can deny her anger and it will affect her own mind and body eventually. Or she can feel anything from an inadequate failure to pure rage, (and her feelings are understandable and justifiable). Forgiveness will probably be the last thing on her mind. WHY shouldn’t she hurt him in return? Because His SIN would then CRIPPLE her! Sin reveals a problem in the sinner – not in those he sins against. Why make His problem her problem? Whatever other choices she must make in her individual situation, she can ultimately choose to forgive her husband and be released from the cycle of grief and pain.

How do we CHANGE and resolve anger? The first step is HONESTY. WARNING: our religious mindsets can set us up for defeat, if we believe that being angry is a sin. If that is the case, the accuser of the brethren delights in keeping us on the witness stand, denying that we are angry. He has an open and shut case against us and sues for damages. Sometimes the suit lasts a lifetime! But the Spirit of God lovingly bids us to get off the witness stand and calls us to the Judge’s (Gen.18:25) chambers to admit the anger. This might scare everyone in the courtroom, but it will not frighten the Judge. For in the honesty and truth of the Judge’s chambers change begins. Anger and Grief begin to let go of our emotions.
Blame and self-pity are big signals that anger is in residence. BLAME builds a prison of offense and/or condemnation around you. Forgiveness is the ONLY key to that prison. We must watch for BLAME in our thinking and our conversations. “Self-Pity” is a big signal that anger is unresolved: “I was hurt,” usually justifies anger rather than resolves it. Just like a person who justifies their actions has not repented of them, rehearsing the hurts is refusing to let go of offense. It is blocking the CHANGE needed. Being “hurt” is “tails” and “BLAME” is “heads” of the same coin. We can start with “heads” and describe the action of the offender; or cut to the result, “tails,” and describe the offense taken. 
Unresolved anger can become a driving force, a passion, an energy that can seem good and productive, while it undermines like termites until the core of character, integrity, hope and joy of life is eaten away. Unresolved anger can become depression, fear, sickness and even a pattern of failure. I know a young lady whose anger at criticism and injustice as a child kept her grieving. She became a prisoner of her focus. Because she could not take her eyes off of her victimization, she remained a victim, actually positioning herself for more criticism and injustice. Resolving her anger was the release from the pattern.
Anger is a strong passion, which of itself is not sin; but we sin, or miss the mark, by how we DEAL with it, (Eph 4:26-32). We MUST resolve it according to Godly principles, and resolve it QUICKLY! Ignoring anger does not make it go away. Anger is tangible, as literal as a hot coal. It will burn and destroy . . . health, relationships, opportunities, destiny. Exploding in temper does not resolve anger because even after the bomb blows, it regenerates if there is no CHANGE of heart or issues! Unresolved anger can change form until it is unrecognizable. It can become a witty cynicism. If my jokes and remarks make people laugh the anger doesn’t seem so dangerous! But anger can anchor GRIEF to our lives! INABILITY or REFUSAL to be comforted can be a sign that the roots of grief have become infected with anger and unforgiveness. It is sometimes difficult to recognize anger or unforgiveness because they have many faces. Anger can SEEM like a responsibility. ‘I must stay angry to protect my family. I must stay angry to protect myself from this ever happening again.’ Or, ‘I must stay angry to insure the guilty party does not go unpunished!’ Anger can even seem to be a positive force and be used as a form of power or control in chaotic times. However, the long range repercussions are not good. James 1:20, “For man’s anger does NOT bring about the righteous life that God desires. (NIV)
If we do not receive comfort, we become CRIPPLED by GRIEF. One of the tell-tale signs that GRIEF has crippled a person is they continually rehearse their trials until the listener fully understands and relives their experience. They usually believe their experience is so unique that no one else can fully understand or sympathize. Another mark of grief being in residence too long is one physical battle after another. Receiving comfort closes the door on calamity or loss. Continued grief keeps the door open, so calamity keeps coming! Hopelessness is not just emptiness, it is a vacuum that sucks in despair. Likewise Grief can become a vacuum that draws more tragedy. WE CANNOT LIVE THERE!
I know a lady who always viewed herself as a “Pastor’s Wife”. When her husband died, the “pastor” died and she suddenly had no identity! She mourned but did not move on to comfort. In the heavy fog of grief she even considered suicide; but God “called her sons to her side to speak to her, encourage and instruct.” She received the comfort and CHANGED from a woman in her 70’s wanting to forfeit her future to a woman who is passionately building the future as she travels and ministers to many!
