Rising Above the Peril
There were several people who were washed off of a walkway into a swollen river in a flood. They were floating along with the current and just able to keep their heads above the water while growing weaker and weaker with every panicked
stroke and gulp of filthy water. Several of them were crying out in great fear and voicing the obvious aspects of peril they were in, crying out about the rushing water, the great amount of debris, the likelihood of drowning. One man, however, was not focusing on the dangerous aspects of floating debris. He was constantly looking for something big enough to grab hold of and use for flotation. He was constantly aware of what the dangerous current was bringing that might be useful in the present circumstances. When a large tree branch came floating along, he grabbed hold of it and rode it to a place where it lodged against a protrusion of land that jutted out into the river. He was then able to climb out of the danger which had, only moments earlier, threatened his life. The tree branch was a possible threat like the other debris but the man believed he could use the flotsam that present dynamics sent his way to better improve his position. He came out unscathed because, while aware of the various dangerous aspects, he chose to focus on what he might apply to rise above the peril.

Suffering Relieved
As the people of God assemble today, may they be mindful of those who have suffered during the storm and flood. May they pray for those who are hurting and those who have lost so much. And may they be thankful for the mercies of the Lord that are new every morning, for great is His faithfulness. ”For He has not despised nor detested the suffering of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He listened.” (Ps.22:24, Amp)

Practical is not Always Adequate
In the middle of the storm, right on top of the troubled water Jesus said, “It is I”. The sufficiency of the boat was doubtful, the only practical thing that
was available was less than adequate. It is Jesus who has given the promise and it is Jesus who will make good on it and it is Jesus that the storm cannot drive away! The storm cannot displace Jesus. Just look at Who has given the promise. Jesus had far better transportation than a leaky old boat. The safest place on this occasion was not in the boat but on the water! Faith is for the purpose of getting out of the boat, not for asking Jesus to get into the boat (Matt. 14:28). Wishing a storm would have never come, asking why storms come, trying to lay blame for the storm are all distractions. Now is the time to look up from the threatening waters and walk with Jesus day by day “to the other side” (Matt.14:22). The safest place is with the Master of the storm.

Fear and Point of Reference
Concerning Hurricane Harvey we, on the Texas Gulf Coast, have just come through a series of unprecedented events and are now facing challenges that are unprecedented. In Matthew, the disciples were terrified because they had no point of reference for what was happening. When the disciples saw Jesus
walking on the lake, that terrified them as much or more than the storm. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear (Mt 14:26). They did not see the circumstances allowing anyone, including Jesus, to walk on water. They considered these circumstances as those that take you down and never let you up. These men of God had heard the heart-wrenching stories of fishermen suffering disaster at sea. Each of them could vividly tell a story of a relative or a friend who had not been able to attain the goal of “the other side” (Matt.14:22) Nerve-testing reports of failure to “reach the other side” had settled upon their ears and they had used them as foundation stones to build a point of reference which, at this point, filled their hearts with terror.
Victory was not on their minds. There was absolutely no thought of, nor any faith for, victory over this situation. Perseverance was no more than an idealistic point made by preachers on land, in the safety of storm-free weather. They hunkered down and just got ready for anything this set of circumstances wanted to throw at them. That is not how we make it. That is not how we persevere. That is not how we receive the promise. The prophetic gift always, annoyingly refuses to let us simply “grab a root and grunt.” Prophet Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matt.14:27) Our focus is on Him Who is not bound by circumstances.

No Gouging in the Storm
We are praying and declaring that people in the storm who have to pay for products or services will not be gouged or cheated in any way. We pray that con men who try to take advantage of people will be shown for what they really are before people are duped. We pray that people will not be sold any product or repair that they don’t truly need. We also pray that people will discover that damage is not as extensive as originally thought and that products and services end up costing less than estimated. “The Lord wants all scales and balances to be right; he wants all business agreements to be fair.” (Prov.16:11, ERV)

Heads Above Flood Waters

As the people of God assemble today, may they discover that in the midst of their corporate prayers, praises and fellowship that they are getting their heads above the flood waters of circumstances because the Light and presence of God Almighty is drawing them up into His arms and His purposes with His enablements.
”God thunders across the waters, Brilliant, his voice and his face,
streaming brightness— God, across the flood waters.” (Ps.29:3, Msg)

In Spite of the Dominoes
Have you felt lately that you were being assailed? It is difficult to replace that biblical description of what some of us have been under recently.
“ASSAIL”: to attack with violence, to assault; to attack with a view to produce changes in the feelings, character or conduct; to shout at. Kathy and I have been assaulted with certain circumstances since the first of the year that have been building like a domino effect. Last night, sitting in my prayer chair, sometime after 2:00am it was as though I could hear a distant, faint laughter accompanied by a taunting voice saying, “And you thought that you would escape such circumstances.” This morning Kathy sat down at the piano amid the dampness and odor of mold and mildew and we began to sing of our Father’s faithfulness and we sang the names of our LORD that we worship and call on when “dominoes” are falling right and left. We decided to make our praises louder, louder than our racing hearts and louder than the clacking and falling “dominoes”. There is ample evidence all around us that we have been assailed but there is also a blessed assurance that our Father is releasing His marvelous favor and lovingkindness in the midst of the assault and the assailant is being put to flight.
”Blessed be the Lord, For He has shown His marvelous favor and lovingkindness
to me [when I was assailed] in a besieged city.” (Ps.31:21, Amp)
