Choosing Life or Death

While there are open doors before us, there is, however, a process of decision-making that we must give ourselves to.  Jehovah’s instruction to prophet Jeremiah has embodied within it the matter of choosing. Jer. 21:8  “You shall also say to this people, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.”  Deut. 30:19 plainly shows us that our God puts His power of command to us in hopes that we will choose life instead of death and choose blessing instead of a curse. We are not simply those who observe and experience the coming and the passing of days and calendar events. We have choices to make as to how those days, events and people affect us; we must make choices as to how we will affect those days, events and people. We can be bearers of life or of death, bearers of blessing or curses.  (Second excerpt from Marty’s article “Doors and Self-Government”)

Getting Past Irritations

ButterflyBlue1Getting past personal irritations and any sense of injustice and all the frustrations that are like prickly fibers in a cocoon to align with God’s word and His ways can get difficult.  Deut. 30:11 confirms that in verse 11 even before verse 19 tells us to choose life.  Deut. 30:11— This commandment, that I’m commanding you today is not TOO difficult for you, it isn’t TOO much for you, it’s not out of your reach.  12  It’s not on a high mountain–you don’t have to get mountaineers to climb the peak and bring it down to your level and explain it before you can live it.  13  And it’s not across the ocean—you don’t have to send sailors out to get it, bring it back, and then explain it before you can live it. 14  No. The word is right here and now—as near as the tongue in your mouth, as near as the heart in your chest. (Msg) So, difficult or not, choose life.  Just do it!

Choose Life

HandReachingOur Lord commanded us to choose life (Deut.30:19). You’d think that goes without saying.  Who, in their right mind, wouldn’t choose life? It sounds simple, but it actually can get complex and difficult, because the first challenge is listening to your spirit instead of  your soul!  Your spirit is where His Spirit dwells, so choosing life starts with pulling from His Truth and Wisdom instead of how we feel because of throbbing pain or blinding fear or understandable anger.  Besides extreme emotions, choices from the soul can be under the influence of squirrelly thinking or deception or bad moods.  We have to work past the soul to the spirit to choose life.

Conquering Choice

MakingChoicesHunters who go after the Big Five in Africa have to take “enough gun” to bring down their powerful prey.  Likewise, we need to understand the personal war in a life cocoon so that we “carry enough gun” and do not show up with a BB gun for a tank fight.  The most effective weapon that we have for life’s many Cocoon-Conquering-Quests is CHOICE.   Deut 30:19—  I have set before you life and death, [Life if you dig out of the cocoon and death if you stay in it ], the blessings and the curses; therefore CHOOSE LIFE.
