I Perceive You Are . . .

handing business cardIn Jn. 4:19 the woman said to Jesus, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.” He wasn’t wearing a T-shirt or handing out business cards or demanding that everyone use the title “prophet” in front of his name. What He was and what He was doing coincided without additional promotion. You don’t have to start a ministry if you are a ministry. If you “be” what you are in Christ, you will, of necessity, “do” what you are. Perhaps if there is no evidence in a person’s life-style, they will find it necessary to try and promote the idea, to the minds of others, of being a certain thing.

A God-Honoring Life

person glowMay desire for our Lord’s character and the empowering of the Holy Spirit help us to turn our backs on a godless, indulgent life and help us to take on a God-filled, God-honoring life. May we shine forth with words and actions that can only be described as honoring the Word and will of Almighty God, so that the present culture and system of this age can never swallow us up and lay claim to our lives. May the cloak of His likeness display who we are, and whose we are, without the need for superficial display of physical marks, titles or pretension.

“God’s readiness to give and forgive is now public. Salvation’s available for everyone! We’re being shown how to turn our backs on a godless, indulgent life, and how to take on a God-filled, God-honoring life.” (Titus 2:11, Msg)

A Good Thing Or A God Thing?

sunrise_blue“Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner’.” (Jn. 5:19)  Two things to note here: (1.) Jesus did not do anything unless He “saw” the Father doing it and (2.) when He did do something, He did it in the same manner the Father would do it.

Religion is in the habit of deciding to do something, then setting about doing it and then asking God to bless it. We can attempt things by ourselves and there will be some kind of result, but is it a God-result? Does the “good thing” take the place of the “God thing?”

Relief Is On Its Way

pile of bricks stacked upWhen things begin to stack up on top of each other and a sense of panic begins trying to creep in, I think many of us have either jumped into a get-it-solved-by-any-means mode or have fallen back into a can’t-do-anything-about-it-so-why-try mode.  But in spite of the temptation to feel that He, who could do something about all of it immediately, has (“for some reason”) just chosen to add one more thing to our load, we will look expectantly for relief. Relief is on its way.

“Don’t add to my troubles.  Give me some relief!” (Jer.17:17, Msg)

“And Now, Here Is His Son”

father with sonChristian apologist, Ravi Zacharias, was invited back to the country of his family’s origin to speak at a conference. The people there did not know Ravi. When it came time for Ravi to speak, the conference host spoke about Ravi’s father for ten minutes. At the end of that time the only thing the host said of Ravi was, “And now here is his son, Ravi, to speak to us.” In that culture, they are accustomed to the son being of the nature of his father so that what you got in the father, you get in the son. Though the host did not know Ravi, he knew Ravi’s father and therefore did not hesitate to turn the podium to him. Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father.” (Jn.14:9)

In God’s Name?

One way to not misrepresent Father is to make sure we are not prophesying out of disappointment with people or events. Are we truly prophesying the word of the Lord or bolted doorare we prophesying what we think should happen or what our disappointment and aggravation wish would happen? Are we prophesying out of our disappointments? Are we prophesying our pet-peeves? There are those who seem poised to attach God’s name to every weather disaster and declare it as representation of God’s judgment upon a group or a nation. From time to time someone will put God’s name on a business venture and when it utterly fails, God’s name is still on the sign and the business cards. People in the marketplace and in government walk around shaking their heads when “Christian” or “preacher” or “God” are mentioned. Unbelieving family and acquaintances freeze-frame such people and put up a wall of resistance. Each such occurrence gives observers an excuse to build the wall of resistance and suspicion higher and higher.
There have been people who try to force some sort of prophetic word upon others and who even try to make it come to pass and effectively close doors for the legitimate prophetic word. Every time I hand a cashier a $20 bill they mark it with a detector pen – they seem to be more inclined to think it is counterfeit than they are to think it is genuine. Not only are unbelievers in the world bolting doors against Christians and their ministries and their predictions but leadership in churches, expecting nothing but the counterfeit, are warning their people about them. People have already seen so much misrepresentation for so many generations that they cannot conceive of the genuine.

Valentines Day

Valentine HeartVALENTINES DAY–The awesome contrast of the love of JESUS stands out vividly and most significantly in history.  It stands out noticeably in comparison to the harsh government and rulers and culture of that time.  Political rulers and military were cruel and unforgiving while religious rulers were stiff and legalistic, meting out punishment without mercy.

Jesus walked among the people, talked with them, touched them and wept over them–all motivated by His love and compassion.  His signs and wonders never benefited Him, only those He lovingly touched.  I suppose that if we look at the life, motivation and actions of Jesus, we would come to the conclusion that the definition of love is “redemptive action.”

“For God so loved . . . that He gave . . .” (Jn.3:16)

The Reason Jesus Could Say, “Trust In Me”

Jesus teaching“Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father [cause us to see the Father–that is all we ask]; then we shall be satisfied.  9  Jesus replied, Have I been with all of you for so long a time, and do you not recognize and know Me yet, Philip? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say then, Show us the Father?”  (Jn.14:8-9, Amp) The reason Jesus could say, “You trust in God so you can trust in me” (14:1)–the reason He could say “If you have seen me then you have seen the Father” is because He had never misrepresented the Father in any way. That speaks of integrity, reliability and credibility and that will be displayed in one’s character and character is displayed in actions.
