The Midianites were defeated when a barley loaf tumbled into their camp (Jud.7:13). But to become a battle-winning barley loaf, we barley grains must be 1.) ground together; 2.) mixed together and 3.) baked together before we can be tumbled into the enemy. Evidently, a well-baked loaf is better than a bunch of loose grains.

“They” have come too late to tell Gideon that God does not stand with the few and cause them to overcome like they were many. Gideon may be confused today. He may be hiding and pounding out a few pitiful pounds of grain today but be careful because tomorrow night he will be on the hillside with a pitcher and trumpet and rejoicing while an army of thousands turn their swords on one another in total confusion. “They” have come too late to convince Gideon that God doesn’t take the care or the time to work the impossible with a small handful.
