Rebuilding Thought Patterns

BuildingBlocksWall
The key difference between winning war and merely surviving is our beliefs and attitudes, and both start  in our thinking.  That’s why God was trying to change Judah’s thinking and focus (Hag.1:5-9).  Rebuilding the temple would change their future. Rebuilding the temple would set their priorities in order and break the cycle they were in. Rebuilding the temple was about vision and purpose. When we have vision of a future that is different, better and beyond today’s limitations, we can muster the passion and zeal to take ground and get to change.

Conditioned by Truth

Silhouette of hiking man jumping over the mountains at sunsetAs we have seen in Hag.1:5-9, Judah was set-up to cower under pressure. We can understand why they shrunk back.  They had been captives for generations. We can live under hereditary curses and generational outlooks on life that “set us up” to suffer loss financially or physically or relationally simply because that is the only experience we have known.  We can be programmed for defeat and have mindsets that keep us prisoner to the same beliefs, appetites, reactions and choices of prior generations.  If that is the case, we are likely to spend our lives merely surviving, not winning, not increasing, not taking any spoils.  If we examine our lives, we might discover that is why we survive instead of advance.  Have we like Judah been conditioned by our experiences instead of the Truth?

Ordering Life According to Wisdom of God

HandCheekThinking
Hag 1:5-9,  “The LORD Almighty says “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” This is what The LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.  Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD. “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.” (NIV)   The instructions were clear: “Give careful thought to your priorities.  Don’t decide your day according to your problems or your feelings or your circumstances.  Order your life according to my wisdom and honor.”  He was telling them to think differently so they could change their world.
