Key To Sound Identity

We can see God addressing the three-legged design of basic human needs in the three questions He asked Adam:

Identity1> The first question was, “Adam where are you?”  Where is the identity that had us as Father-to-son, face-to-face, yesterday, but today has you hiding?  After Adam ate of the tree, when he looked at himself, his mirror was cracked.  He was fragmented and his self-image was scarred.  If you think that mess-ups in your life can de-daughter or de-son you, your identity is too fragile, and it is not rooted in relationship with your Heavenly Father.  The first shot the devil took in the wilderness was at Jesus’ identity when he said, “If you are God’s Son.”  Jesus was so confident of His identity and unshakeable relationship with the Father that Satan couldn’t tempt Him to even try to prove it by turning stones to bread.  The key to sound identity is that it be rooted in relationship with God.

The Things Said By Us

Someone Else Is Aware

cat mirrorWhether we are aware we function around this three-legged design of basic human needs or not, our adversary, the devil, is very aware.   So when he comes to steal or kill or destroy, he will target either self-image or self-worth or self-government.  He knows any one of the three can undermine the other two.  Why does he know this, because he’s been practicing since the garden.  When he seduced Eve and Adam and they failed in self-government, their self-image and self-worth crumbled also.

A Place Of Agreement

A Cracked Reflection

cracked image

None of us outgrow the need for identity, affirmation or boundaries.  If  they are  met, they help us to be healthy mentally, emotionally, physically and relationally.  If they are not met, they set us up for sabotage.  Since none of us had a perfect family life growing up, we have all been sabotaged to some degree and had conflicts with self-image that left our self-worth in doubt, or vice versa.  And we have all faced embarrassment or failure regarding our self-government.  So, it is no private scar since everyone’s mirror (self-image) gets whacked in life.  Sometimes it is even our own doing; but how we respond after the fact is the crucial matter.  If we continue to only look at a cracked reflection, a marred, fragmented person; that will keep us from agreeing with the way God sees us and keep us from lining up with God’s intentions for our life and future.

That Can Only Be The Power Of God

“He… taught people the truth of God. God’s kingdom was his theme—that beginning right now they were under God’s government, a good government!” (Matt.4:23b, Msg)

“All governments are under God.” (Rom.13:1a, Msg)

“and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.”(Col.2:10, GNT)

Boundaries To Function Within

fence top
While identity is the first basic need in helping see ourselves as God does, the second basic need for all of us is the need for affirmation and the third basic need for all humans is boundaries.  Boundaries give us an order to function within to insure our safety and well-being.  Boundaries would be one side of a coin and the other is self-government.

Why Are We In This Present Mess?

questions

“Why are we in this present mess and why is God allowing it?”  That is basically what Gideon was asking. The old phrase comes to mind, “How soon they forget”.  Gideon was asking that question in Jud.6:13 but if we scoot back up a few verses to verse one it plainly states, “The children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord…”.  Perhaps one reason humans let their “forgetter” work so efficiently is because we pretty much feel that we are not accountable for what we don’t remember. Yet, consequences still follow.

Seeing Value In You

hand shoulder

While identity is the first basic need in helping see ourselves as God does, the second basic need for all of us is the need for affirmation.  Affirmation is someone else’s agreement that there is value in you, in your potential, in your purpose and in your presence on earth.  Affirmation comes thru relationship.  If affirmation is one side of a coin, the other is self-worth.

Identity And Self-Image

So Let’s come to some insight on how to see ourselves as God does, starting with awareness of three basic needs common to all of us.  These needs may adjust and morph as we mature, but they don’t go away.  The first is identity.  We all need a sense of self.  Identity is who you see young woman looking into a mirrorwhen you look in the mirror.  Identity includes the way you process and think, the way you react to life, the things that you hold important and how you express your feelings.  Part of your identity is in your “wiring” or personality.  We are born with some combination of the four basic personalities, which I will label as lion, eagle, man and ox (Lance Wallnau).  A “lion” is fast paced and has a drive to get results.  An “eagle” is slow paced and gets up in the morning to get their task list perfectly completed at their own pace.  The “man” personality is a fast paced, people-person whose identity includes relating with others.  The “ox” person is slow paced and finds identity in facilitating others.  The way we view relationships and the way we invest in relationships are all part of our identity.  Since our identity is one side of a coin and self-image is the other, a healthy sense of identity yields a healthy self-image.

Different Than They Came

jump up1

As the people of God gather today, may people leave different than they came. As they leave the meeting, may they say, “I will never be the same again because of the power of the risen Christ that has changed me”.

“He jumped to his feet and walked. The man went into the Temple with them, walking back and forth, dancing and praising God. Everybody there saw him walking around and praising God. They recognized him as the one who sat begging at the Temple’s Gate Beautiful and rubbed their eyes, astonished, scarcely believing what they were seeing.” (Acts 3:8-10, Msg)

your cords, And strengthen your stakes.  3  For you shall
expand to the right and to the left…” (Isa.54:2-3a, NKJV)

Power In God-Thinking

God-thinking

There’s power and protection in thinking like God thinks, and it will keep us from becoming prey for the thief when he comes to kill, steal and destroy.  If we have mis-beliefs  about who we are, conclusions contaminated by experiences or emotions or hurts, they can cause limitations that keep us from destiny and purpose.   They can make us miss the life God intended us to live.

Heart Thinking

heart thinking

Prov. 23:7, “For as a man thinks in his heart, so [is] he.”  Heart thinking includes more than just thoughts and brain activity.  It is a conglomeration of our feelings, conclusions, opinions, concerns, beliefs and memories, to list a few; and all those things contribute to who we are.  Most people wonder at some point: “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?”  I believe God wants us to know the answers to those things too.  One place to start is a reality check on how we “think in our hearts” about ourselves.  This is not about getting on a “ME” focus, but rather a healthy self-awareness.  That is important because our thinking needs to agree with God’s thinking about us.

Demonstration Of Power

Powerful sun

As the people of God assemble today, may their hearts be filled with desire and expectancy to show forth the power of God as well as His words and principles of truth, doctrine and theology. May the naysayers that oppose and argue against the Spirit of Christ be speechless as they hear of and witness the powerful Word of God in action as lives are redeemed, bodies healed and signs and wonders loosed that point back to Jesus the risen Christ.

“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:  5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1Cor.2:4-5, KJV)

No Longer Freeze-Framed

window ice

May the Lord break you loose from the frame that people have used to freeze-frame you in a certain time-period of your life. May He loose you from a certain failure you were known for, or a certain person or thing you were associated with but have gotten the victory over since. May His love, acceptance and faithful Word wash you and completely cleanse you from all of that residue and help others focus on what the Lord has done.

“…God pays no attention to what others say (or what you think) about you. He makes up his own mind.” (Rom.2:11b, Msg)

The Pull That Overpowers

The planets have been set on course by divine fiat. But when a rogue meteor crashes into a planet it can have a great effect upon its course. “Fiery meteors” crash into us sometimes even when we are on the course God has put us on. Our emotions and finite considerations can keep us veering off course. Those “black holes,” those failures, doubts and events of the past can then begin to pull us away from destiny.

gravity planetsDoubtless, everyone reading this has, at one time or another, wondered why an omnipotent God would “allow” certain things to “defeat” us and so successfully pull us off course with His purpose for our lives. Yet, in reality, God’s purpose is pulling us directly into the heart of destiny. It is our emotions and impatience and our not enduring that allows the “gravity pull” of other “planets” and “black holes” to pull us off course and cause time delays and other injuries.

Even when we do get knocked off course and get pulled to one side or the other, if we will “press toward the mark”, God’s “gravity pull” will out-pull all other influences upon us. Cf. “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.”(Prov 24:16)

“The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.” (Deut 28:7)

“So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.” (Isa 59:19)

“Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.  I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.  He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.” (Ps 57:1-3)

God has the strongest “pull,” that is, if we want to be pulled, His “pull” will overpower all others. Everything in time and dimensions has been set up for our advantage to get us to destiny.

Times Of Celebration

Firework streaks in night sky, celebration background

May the Lord give you good times, happy times
and times of celebration.

“But the time is coming when you’re going to hear laughter
and celebration, marriage festivities, people exclaiming,
“Thank God-of-the-Angel-Armies. He’s so good! His love
never quits,” as they bring thank offerings into God’s Temple.
I’ll restore everything that was lost in this land. I’ll make
everything as good as new.’ I, God, say so.” (Jer.33:11, Msg)

Away From Gravity Pull

gravity pull2God is making “all things work together” to pull us into His purpose. He has given us prophetic words which bring a divine “uncomfortableness” concerning our present circumstances. When we receive that prophetic word, it acts as a rocket booster, pushing us away from the gravity pull of “black holes.”  Paul’s remedy in the face of such a pull was “I follow after, if that I may apprehend… forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before” (Phil.3:13); the Hebrews writer also laid in this bit of helpful advice:  “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us” (Heb.12:1).
