Paul called those enslaving, preventative mindsets “beggarly elements” (Gal.4:9). It was not even the fact that those institutions and traditions, in and of themselves, were so evil. It was that they had such little value that they were not worth clinging to. The “clinging to” meant a rejection of those possibilities from the heavenly viewpoint. Clinging to one precludes clinging to the other. Connecting to one causes disconnection from the other.

Even as the Lord kept His hand upon Moses for His purposes through him for the saving of a nation, may the Lord keep His hand on His sons and daughters that they retain their vigor, eyesight and clarity of mind. May their steps be quick and sure that they may fully serve the timing of the purposes of God Almighty for as long as He deems necessary in a nation that needs saving.

When the man who invented the umbrella walked out on the streets of London with it for the first time, people stoned him. He refused to continue to succumb to the elements and connected himself to a higher level of perception of his surroundings and those who had no desire to connect any differently than they already were could not deal with the change. There was a better way to live, a better way to do things and prevent sickness from exposure but it was different from the elemental things of the age. Things signaling a new age, or even perhaps, from an age to come were feared and not welcome.

The rudimentary and elemental things are those things that anchor the ship in the harbor and refuse to put the wings on the plane so it can soar in heavenly places. Paul’s chagrin over the Galatians was because they were living as though their lives were bound by earthly elements and the outcome of their lives was being determined merely by the weak and beggarly principles they had connected themselves to—as though there was some kind of obligation to maintain a grip on them because someone espoused them.

As the people of God assemble today, may they, like their loving God,
comfort those who mourn and surround them and minister to them
in such a way that the mourners may receive the oil of joy for mourning.
May there be such facilitation that they receive the garment of praise for
the spirit of heaviness and leave that time of worship and fellowship with lifted heads.

Jesus instructed His disciples to pray that the Kingdom of Heaven would come to earth (Mt 6:10). That is one major reason why the moves of God and manifestations of God in this earth are so important—because they lift our sense-oriented sight and sense-enslaved minds beyond the pitiful limitations of man’s small world. Which brings me to ask the question: How in the world did Peter ever walk on water?! To see what we have never seen and to do what we have never done, we must connect to what we have never been connected to!

It is likely that Jesus would often use the term “Kingdom of Heaven” attempting to get the people’s focus off the “weak and beggarly” (Gal.4:9) and the things that so readily paint a picture of the impossible. Such terminology as “Kingdom of Heaven” shows that it is the Kingdom that is in stark contrast to the limitations of earth and its mindsets. Jesus said, “My Kingdom is not of this world” (Jn.18:36). He just as well could have said, “My Kingdom is not of the mindset of this present age.” Jesus had a far different orientation, a far different point of reference and totally different values that He so longed for people to get connected to.

The word “elemental” in Gal.4:3 means “an element, first principal; the letters of the alphabet as the elements of speech, not however the written characters, but the spoken sounds.” It is like taking a fuse and never putting it down into the powder so that the cannon can be fired. The fuse is such an elemental part of the whole process. It would be something like holding the fuse and showing people the fuse, even lighting the fuse but never realizing the power of the powder and power of the cannon. The fuse would just burn down to nothing with no result for having held it or having lit it. It would be just the futile waste of one good match. By the time we get to v.9 Paul is referring to those elemental things as “weak and beggarly” and pleading with the Galatians to know why they have connected themselves once again to such useless legalistic exercise.

is no reason for us to live a lesser version of what God

what they were born to be.

There must be a connection to something beyond the “elemental things.” Paul’s deep concern over the “elemental things” of Gal.4:3 is about the things of this present age which so occupy our minds and distract us from Father’s true character and purpose for His Kingdom. Those elemental things represent institutions, traditions and mindsets. “They are the elementary symbols of the law unable to justify” (Fausset). We easily connect to and identify with those things and then they get a hold on us which obligates us to their legalisms which we end up serving. If we speak, act and live like everyone else in this age we will get no different results than they get. What we do and the way we go about it; what we say and the results we get are evidence of what and who we have connected to.

Jesus wanted to get His disciples connected to a higher source than the religion they had been stooped in. The legalism they had practiced could identify adherents but couldn’t produce fruit that witnessed to who the Father really is. The legalism was a witness to their personal determination but not to the character of the Father. The only thing their legalism communicated was that they were connected to a religion and its rules. Jn 15:8 “This is how my Father shows who he is–when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.” (MSG) They had to be pruned back by the word of Jesus just so that they would be ready to bear good fruit (15:2).

Jesus got done what He got done because of His connection with the Father. He accomplished what He accomplished because of that connection. Jn 5:19 Jesus said to the Jews, “I can guarantee this truth: The Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing. Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does.” (GW) The fruit of our lives is a witness of the connections we have made. In Jn.15:4 Jesus makes it plain that the only way a branch can produce fruit is to live in the vine, i.e., be properly connected.

Jesus had the most valuable connection of all, connection with the Father and His desire was that we might experience that connection. The Father set things up in such a way that we may have connection with Him through Jesus so that we can do what Jesus did. Jn 17:21 “I pray that all of these people continue to have unity in the way that you, Father, are in me and I am in you.” (GW) Then Jesus goes on to illustrate to us the flow of power and energy to the branches of the vine which produce the grapes. That flow and fruitfulness is a result of that connection. Jn 15:4 “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me. 5 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing.” (MSG)

Jesus instructed His disciples to pray that the Kingdom of Heaven would come to earth (Mt 6:10). That is one major reason why the moves of God and manifestations of God in this earth are so important—because they lift our sense-oriented sight and sense-enslaved minds beyond the pitiful limitations of man’s small world. Which brings me to ask the question: How in the world did Peter ever walk on water?! To see what we have never seen and to do what we have never done, we must connect to what we have never been connected to!

It is likely that Jesus would often use the term “Kingdom of Heaven” attempting to get the people’s focus off the “weak and beggarly” (Gal.4:9) and the things that so readily paint a picture of the impossible. Such terminology as “Kingdom of Heaven” shows that it is the Kingdom that is in stark contrast to the limitations of earth and its mindsets. Jesus said, “My Kingdom is not of this world” (Jn.18:36). He just as well could have said, “My Kingdom is not of the mindset of this present age.” Jesus had a far different orientation, a far different point of reference and totally different values that He so longed for people to get connected to.

The legalism they had practiced could identify adherents but couldn’t produce fruit that witnessed to who the Father really is. The legalism was a witness to their personal determination but not to the character of the Father. The only thing their legalism communicated was that they were connected to a religion and its rules. Jn 15:8 “This is how my Father shows who he is–when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.” (MSG) They had to be pruned back by the word of Jesus just so that they would be ready to bear good fruit (15:2). 
May the Lord God move by the power of His Word and His Spirit in schools across America in this school year. May He surround our children with His keeping power and may He raise up from them Daniels, Deborahs, Josephs and Davids who impact their environment for the saving of many.

Jesus had the most valuable connection of all, connection with the Father and His desire was that we might experience that connection. The Father set things up in such a way that we may have connection with Him through Jesus so that we can do what Jesus did. Jn 17:21 “I pray that all of these people continue to have unity in the way that you, Father, are in me and I am in you.” (GW) Then Jesus goes on to illustrate to us the flow of power and energy to the branches of the vine which produce the grapes. That flow and fruitfulness is a result of that connection. Jn 15:4 “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me. 5 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing.” (MSG)
