A Good Thing Or A God Thing?

“Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner’.” (Jn. 5:19)  Two things to note here: (1.) Jesus did not do anything unless He “saw” the Father doing it and (2.) when He did do something, He did it in the same manner the Father would do it.

Religion is in the habit of deciding to do something, then setting about doing it and then asking God to bless it. We can attempt things by ourselves and there will be some kind of result, but is it a God-result? Does the “good thing” take the place of the “God thing?”
